one = man. Hebrew. "ish. . App-14. discontented = bitter of soul. Hebrew. nephesh. App-13. Compare Judges 18:25, "angry": i.e. embittered.

captain = chief, leader, or prince.

men. Hebrew. "ish. App-14.

Verse 3

come forth. Syriac and Vulgate read. "dwell". No Ellipsis then to be supplied.

God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4.

Verse 4

hold = stronghold, or fortified camp. First occurance.

Verse 6

men. Hebrew. "enosh. App-14.

now Saul. Note the Figure of speech Parenthesis. App-6.

in Ramah. Or, in the high place.

Verse 8

is sorry for = taketh pity upon.

Verse 9

Then, &c.: verses: 1 Samuel 22:9-16, by the Figure of speech Hysteresis (App-6), give details not contained in former narration (21. i-9).

Abiathar, escaped. Saul thus caused the transfer of the High Priest, with the Urim and Thummim, to David.

Verse 22

I have occasioned, &c.: i.e. involved. A mark of David"s characteristic tenderness.

life = soul. Hebrew. nephesh. App-13.
