Verse 1

the LORD = Jehovah. App-4.

said. See note on Deuteronomy 2:9,

ark. First used of Joseph"s coffin (Genesis 50:26); used of money-box (2 Kings 12:9). Not the ark of the covenant made later, but a temporary box.

Verse 2

write. See note on Exodus 17:14, and App-47.

brakest = breakedst in pieces, or smashed.

Verse 4

commandments = words. Compare Exodus 34:4, Exodus 34:28.

spake. See note on Deuteronomy 2:1.

unto. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Targum of Onkelos, and The Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel read "with".

assembly. Hebrew. kahal, convocation of called-out people.

Verse 5

as = according as.

Verse 6

children = sons.

Beeroth, &c. = the wells of the sons of Jaakan. Compare Numbers 20:22-29; Numbers 33:31-38.

Verse 8

separated. Compare Numbers 3:5-12.

Levi. (1) On account of loyalty. Exodus 32:26, and Deuteronomy 33:8. (2) After revolt of Korah, &c. Num 16; Num 17. (3) After the sin of People with Moabites. Deuteronomy 25:6-13. Psalms 106:30. Malachi 2:4, Malachi 2:5; Malachi 3:3.

stand = serve. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), App-6, put for all service and ministration.

Verse 9

is. Hebrew "he [is]".

Verse 10

stayed. Compare Exodus 34:28.

and. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate, read "therefore".

destroy. Hebrew. shahath = infliction of judgments.

Verse 11

take thy journey. Compare Numbers 10:11.

Circumcise. Here charged as a duty. in Deuteronomy 30:6 promised as a future blessing. Compare Leviticus 26:41. Jeremiah 6:10. Acts 7:51. Circumcision mentioned after Exodus 12:48 only in Joshua 5:3-7 and Jeremiah 9:25. Uncircumcision of Gentiles shows that circumcision was practiced. Compare Isaiah 52:1. Jeremiah 9:25, Jeremiah 9:26. Ezekiel 31:18.

Verse 17

the LORD your God = Jehovah your "Elohim (App-4).

is. Hebrew "He [is]".

God = "Elohe. App-4.

gods = "Elohim. App-4. Compare Joshua 22:22. Daniel 2:47.

Lord = Adonai. App-4.

lords = Adonim. App-4.

GOD = "El. See App-4.

terrible = to be feared.

taketh reward = accepteth a bribe. 2 Chronicles 19:7. Acts 10:34. Romans 2:11. 1 Peter 1:17.

Verse 18

fatherless, &c. Compare Psalms 68:5; Psalms 146:9. Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Species), App-6, put for all the afflicted.

Verse 19

Love ye, &c. Compare Leviticus 19:34.

stranger = sojourner.

Verse 20

Him. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Targum of Onkelos, The Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate, read "and Him".

cleave. Compare Joshua 23:8. 2 Kings 17:36.

Verse 21

praise = song of praise.
