RSV translation of one-tenth of a Roman legion—about six hundred men. KJV translates “band.” When Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified, the whole battalion assembled together before Jesus (Matthew 27:27 ; Mark 15:16 ). This battalion would have been the Second Italian Cohort. See Cohort .
