1. plaster with lime or stucco, D. 3.29, 23.208, IG 22.1672.107, 140, 179, Inscr.Magn. 100b.40, etc.: Med., κ. τοὺς ἐγχελεῶνας have them plastered, Arist. HA 592a4: Pass., Bito 55.9, Plu. Comp.Arist.Cat.Ma. 4, IG 7.2712.35 (Acraeph.); τάφοι κεκονιαμένοι Matthew 23:27.

2. generally, daub over, as with pitch, ἀγγεῖα κεκονιαμένα D.S. 19.94.

3. metaph., κ. τὸ πρόσωπον paint, disguise it, Philostr. 22: Pass., κεκονιαμένοι LXX Proverbs 21:9 (κεκονιαμένους is f.l. for κεκονιμένους Them. Or. 7.91d).

κονιάω, κονίω: perfect passive participle κεκονιαμενος; (from κονία, which signifies not only 'dust' but also 'lime'); to cover with lime, plaster over, whitewash: τάφοι κεκονιάμενοι (the Jews were accustomed to whitewash the entrances to their sepulchres, as a warning against defilement by touching them (B. D. under the word , 1 at the end; cf. Edersheim, Jesus the Messiah, ii. 316ff)), Matthew 23:27; τοῖχε κεκονιαμένε is applied to a hypocrite who conceals his malice under an outward assumption of piety, Acts 23:3. (Demosthenes, Aristotle, Plutarch, others; for שִׂיד, Deuteronomy 27:2, 4.)

κονιάω, ";whitewash,"; is found in a series of temple accounts, Michel 594.96 (Delos—B.C. 279) τὴν θυμέλην τοῦ βωμοῦ τοῦ ἐν τῆι νήσωι κονιάσαντι Φιλοκράτε. The pass., as in Matthew 23:27, occurs in CIG I. 1625.16. For κονία, ";plaster,"; and κονιατής, ";plasterer,"; see P Oxy XII. 1450 .4, .6 (A.D. 249–50), and for κονίασις, ";plastering,"; P Flor III. 384.78 (v/A.D.) τὴν τῶν δωμάτων κονίασιν, and for κονίαμα. PSI V. 547.19 (iii/B.C.) τὴν κρύπτην ὁμοίαν τῶι κονιάματι. In the private account P Oxy IV. 739.7 (c. A.D. 1) κονίου εἰς πρ [ο ]σφαγίου (ὀβολός), the meaning may be ";powder (?) for a relish 1 ob."; (Edd.).
